Brian began his career as a teacher of physical education in 1974 in a co-educational post-primary school in Northern Ireland. As head of PE, he was involved in the development of the school’s pastoral curriculum and coached individuals and teams to provincial and national honours. Brian’s 22 years of teaching included two periods of secondment, including as an Advisory Teacher for the local Education Authority and in a role developing curriculum materials for teachers and pupils in Health-Related Physical Education.
On taking up a position as a Development Officer with the Sports Council for Northern Ireland (now Sport NI), Brian had organisational responsibility for the governing bodies of sport in NI and for links with education. During his nine years at Sport NI, Brian co-authored the NI Strategy for Sport 2009-2019.
From 2006, until his retirement in 2018, Brian was a Senior Lecturer on the Health, Physical Activity and Sport BSc (Hons) course at Stranmillis University College (a college of Queen’s University, Belfast).
Amongst a range of volunteering positions, Brian has been a member of the Board of Sport NI, serving as Interim Chair in 2016-2017, a member of the Board of Governors of an integrated primary school, Chair of a community multi-sports facility and as a Director of a community sports development network.
Brian has worked as an Expert Witness since 2006 and has taken instruction from more than 20 solicitors in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and England.
