Mr Geoff Edmondson OBE, 1938-2014 - Joint Founder of the Institute of Expert Witness

It is a sad duty, but a great honour to be able to say a few words about the ‘Great Man’ - Dr Steve Lloyd President, Institute of Expert Witnesses

I first met Geoff over 30 years ago when he was working for the advisory service in Kent. He remained a close, trusted and highly respected friend for all those years, irrespective of the position he held, or the honours bestowed upon him. Geoff was first and foremost a wonderful family man. He adored his wife, children and grandchildren and was never more proud, or deeply affectionate when being with, or talking, about his beloved.

As a friend he was fiercely loyal and you could always count on his unwavering support. He would always be honest and ‘tell it like it is’, with his keen sense of humour and sensitive persuasiveness. As a professional, he was immaculate, always displaying the highest standards of courtesy, attention to detail and an insatiable appetite for cutting edge technology. Geoff quickly embraced all forms of innovation in order to make things better for children, students, teachers and advisors.

Geoff’s long and dedicated service to baalpe (now afPE) was outstanding and was deservedly recognized with an Honorary Life Membership citation. The award of the OBE, an honour that he was truly proud of and delighted with, further recognized Geoff’s work nationally and internationally. Geoff’s high quality input in Exeter University was admired and highly valued by the thousands of students that he worked with; he really did ‘make a difference’.

In founding the IEW with Peter Wright, Geoff worked tirelessly in developing, not only the service but also importantly the people within it. Geoff’s mentoring was, as the rest of his work, inspiring and motivating, he always made time and gave words of wisdom to new colleagues.

Geoff was a Great Man, a great rugby player and fan, an icon in his professional life and a rock in his personal world, which revolved around his adoring family.

We are all blessed to have known Geoff. There are so many people whose lives were touched by him who will remain eternally grateful and truly happy to have known such a kind, generous and genuine man.
